ramos gin fizz recipe the food quest

Even the food-obsessed can add a new hobby once in a while, right?

My new telescope came and I couldn’t be more excited. Is anyone else here a stargazing buff?

I’ve been learning about my telescope a little more each day and even managed to take this picture of the moon with my phone through the telescope lens! Trust me, it’s nothing an astrophotographer would be in awe over but I’m sure impressed 🙂

Inspired by the bright white moon, tonight I’m shaking up (well, blending up) a batch of bright white Ramos Gin Fizzes.

I’m trying to champion my Fizz skills because stars aren’t the only thing on the horizon, Mother’s Day is just a few days away!

What’s in a Ramos Gin Fizz?

Since Covid began I’ve been spending time learning how to make craft cocktails like the ones I long for from my favorite NYC cocktail bars. And while talking to my mom the topic of Ramos Gin Fizzes came up.

My mom grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona and she reminisced making batches of fizzes with her mom and sisters and sipping them by the pool. I said… “Batches?! Did it take you FOREVER to make it?” A traditional Ramos Gin Fizz is known to take about 12 minutes to shake it up “properly.” So, the thought of making a batch of these drinks sounded preposterous.

My mom said… “Nope. It was the 70s and we just threw it all in a blender, whipped it up until it was foamy, poured it in Champagne glasses and topped it with club soda.” These drinks were her mom’s – my grandmother’s – favorite cocktails. I haven’t been able to find a recipe where these famously shaken drinks are whipped up in a blender, but hell, I’ll try my Grandma’s Ramos recipe.

What’s it taste like?

This cocktail is light, airy and the flavor is a delicate creamy citrus. I can’t stress enough that in order to enjoy a Ramos Fizz, you need to be someone who appreciates a DELICATE flavors. I’m so used to pungent fruity cocktails blasting with flavor. But picture something your dainty grandmother used to sip – a real lady’s drink. This cocktail stands on its own but would pair nicely with food that’s equally delicate like a cucumber finger sandwiches or lightly fried squash blossoms.
