It’s time for margaritas!

Forget June 21, the real kickoff of Summer is Cinco de Mayo because it’s officially margarita season.

Now, let me be frank, when the calendar flips to May 5th I’m not one of the wackos running to my local Mexican joint to wait in line or elbow my way to a bar stool in order to take a picture of myself eating nachos and sipping on margaritas. But if I happen to realize May 5 is a few days away, I’ll ask my husband if he wants to sneak out for a relaxing dinner before the frenzy hits.

Although I love holidays, I hate fighting other patrons for the attention of an overwhelmed waiter or eating the dinner an overwhelmed kitchen turns out. I like my Cinco de Mayo, my New Year’s Eve and my Valentine’s Day dinners at home. I, of course, celebrate these events by going out as well, just NOT on that particular night.

But this year I’d do anything to be out with a group of friends, sipping margaritas and enjoying the normalcy of a packed bar. I hate crowds, but how eerie the world is without them.

Simplifying the Margarita

I’ve been holed up in my house – like everyone else – since March and while I’m beginning to go slightly stir crazy, I HAVE been able to spend ample time testing margarita recipes. And I’ll admit, my favorite one – that’s more tequila and lime forward – was surprisingly found through Food Network. I’ve swapped their fresh lime juice and simple syrup for limeade because… who the F can find fresh limes when the world is falling apart!

Classic Margarita Recipe

Cut a few corners by using fresh limeade in my favorite Classic Margarita Recipe. Pair with salty tortilla chips and spicy salsa or fresh guacamole. Careful, these are strong!

Prep Time 3 minutes
Total Time 3 minutes

Ingredients

  • 3 oz tequila blanco
  • 3 oz fresh limeade (Trader Joe's is my favorite)
  • 1 tsp orange liqueur (like Cointreau or Grand Marnier)

  1. In a cocktail shaker, combine ice, limeade and orange liqueur.
  2. Shake until cocktail shaker begins to frost, about 30 seconds.
  3. Strain over glass filled with fresh ice.
